The Education Committee of Rotary Club of Poona Downtown has started an ambitious program on adult literacy on 21 August 2013 at the Darode Mala slum in Koregaon Park. This program will be conducted thrice a week for 3 months (36 classes). There are 15 "students", all women, 20 to 70 years of age. Most of them are illiterate; a few can write their names, just about. We also provide snacks to them as recommended by the District. Their teacher is a 20-years old girl from the same slum. She studied up to S.Y. B.A., but then she was married off, had a baby and that was the end of her education. She volunteered spontaneously to teach the women. "Don't pay me anything, I wish to do this out of my interest", she said. However, we will compensate her. We hope that the women will become sufficiently proficient to write properly and even read Marathi newspapers. This experience will also enable us to fine-tune the programme.
