Under the Medical Projects 3 and 4 - Women's Welfare and Blood Donation and Blood related Disorders-- the first awareness program on Anemia and Nutrition, was organized for the girls and boys( youth 18-25 years) of Ishanya Foundation on the 4th of October 2019. 68 (60 girls and 8 boys) youth and the staff members attended the program. This was a joint project of Rotary and Inner Wheel Clubs of Poona Downtown. Ishanya Foundation serves the underserved community and is engaged in impactful welfare driven activities. Their larger focus is on education creating livelihoods for the marginal community. Earlier interaction with the vulnerable group of young women and the teachers reflected the need for nutrition and anemia awareness as the girls came hungry, were pale, sometimes fainting in the class rooms and generally under nourished. This was a need based program with lecture, group poster presentations, Q and A and interactive. The content consisted of 1. What is Anemia, types, symptoms, prevention, treatment and doable self management with particular focus on Nutritional Anemia? 2. Nutrition – included the healthy plate, food pyramid, portions, local and affordable foods, food exchanges, macro and micronutrients for optimal health and optimal hemoglobin. Respecting the learning abilities of the youth the entire communication process was in Hindi and some Marathi and at very basic ground level, combined with visuals. The four groups of young boys and girls did a group activity and made 4 charts /posters. a. Balanced and healthy plate for children less than 10 b. Balanced and healthy plate for adolescent girls and boys(youth) between 10-25 c. Balanced and healthy plate for Pregnant women d. Balanced and healthy plate for geriatric (elderly people)/Adult. Each group made an excellent effort in presenting their posters in English. Ms Nutan Wakhle of the Inner Wheel, dietician by profession added tips and treats in cooking methods for optimal nutrition, took Q and As . Shagufta Anwar, President, Inner Wheel and Aruna Rathi, Chair Women's Welfare made their opening and closing remarks. Ima Lobo and Vidya from RCPD and IWC and Aparna Pradhan from IWC were present. Follow ups would be useful in monitoring program outcomes.
