Developing future generations of safe, aware and emotionally, mentally and physically well-developed individuals is the prime need of our country today. In keeping with this vision, Rotary India Literacy Mission has set out a goal of 100% literacy under it’s TEACH program. Co-hosted by Rotary Club of Poona Downtown, Rotary Club Poona and Rotary Club Poona Pride, ‘Keeping Children Safe Online’ was a first of these initiatives by the TEACH Committee of RID 3131. The mega event, held on Saturday, July 16th, 2016 at the Devang Mehta Auditorium of Persistent, was a resounding success. The committee ably convened by PP Yezdi Batliwala, worked ceaselessly for months to ensure a record registration of over 375 participants. Valuable inputs and guidance was given by Rt. Vaishali Bhagwat, Advocate and Cyber Law Expert. Teachers, counselors, parents and other care givers, police officials, NGOs working with children, software developers and lawyers formed part of the audience who showed their concern about the online safety of our children by their sheer presence at this seminar. The event began with a beautifully rendered invocation by Annette Shravani Mookerji and the release of the booklet, CD and games for the seminar. The Chief Guest, the Commissioner of Police Pune, Rashmi Shukla, spoke on the need for parents, teachers and all caregivers being alive and alert to the menace of online predators targeting vulnerable children. She spoke from the perspective of a senior police officer and also that of an anxious parent of teenage children. She assured the audience of greater police awareness and sensitization in handling such cases. DG Prashant Deshmukh gave an overview of the RID 3131. ZLCC Dr. Bal Inamdar spoke about the TEACH Initiative. Mr. Rohit Srivastava spoke on ‘Cyber threats to Children’. He highlighted threats to children hooked onto the internet and are vulnerable to cyber bullying, online sexual harassment or creating and uploading inappropriate content.
